Chapter V | “Immortal Love”
♣♣♣
The next day at school. It was before morning homeroom.
With Golden Week starting next week, the students were already getting restless.
Since today was Friday, after the weekend, they only had to attend school on Monday and Tuesday before getting a five-day break. The sports club members were discussing trips and tournaments, while the others were excitedly making plans for the holidays.
Meanwhile, my heart was anything but calm.
Himari had declared that we were no longer friends, and a night had passed since then. After that, she called Hibari-san, and they left by car without even listening to what I had to say.
Thanks to that, I had to call Saku-neesan and ask her to bring money to cover the bill at Kandagawa.
I thought she’d be furious, but when she saw me covered in Calpis, she burst out laughing and was in a surprisingly good mood. Of course, she also reported it to my two older sisters who were already married.
Speaking of messages, Himari had been leaving me on read since last night.
Even at school, she refused to talk to me. The fact that we sat next to each other only made the awkwardness worse.
…She’s really serious about cutting me off.
I don’t get it. Why? There’s so much I don’t understand.
What’s she so upset about? Well, from the flow of the
conversation, it’s probably about Rion-san becoming the exclusive model, right? But why does she hate it so much? We worked well together during the shoot, and we actually get along, don’t we?
And what’s with this “cutting off” nonsense? Are you in elementary school or something?
Thinking about it, I started to feel annoyed. Why do I have to be treated like the bad guy here? Right? Did I do something wrong?
“…………”
I took a sip of my Yoghurppe. I bought it from the vending machine this morning.
When I glanced to the side, my eyes met Himari’s. She was also sipping her Yoghurppe.
“…………”
“…………”
Himari smiled smugly.
It was like she was saying, “Nfufu~. Even though I said we’re not friends anymore, you can’t stop thinking about how cute I am, can you~? Yuu, you really love me, don’t you~?” Sure, I’ll admit she’s cute, but do you realize there’s a giant boomerang stuck in the back of your head?
“…………”
Hmph.
If that’s how she’s going to be, then I have my own ways too. Specifically, a technique I learned from Rion-san over the past few weeks.
I took out a small bag of snacks from my bag. It was a new product from the convenience store near my house—a super spicy habanero-flavored snack. I bit into one with a crunch.
The spiciness hit me like a bolt.
Washing it down with Yoghurppe made the sweetness of the lactic acid stand out even more.
“Ah, this is so good.” “……!?”
“But I don’t think I can finish this alone. Anyone wanna help me out~?”
“~~~~!?”
Heh. She’s wavering.
After always being played by her, I need to show my mental superiority in moments like this.
After all, I didn’t do anything wrong. It was Rion-san’s decision to become the model, not something I forced on her. Directing her anger at me is completely misplaced.
Besides, the fact that she always reads my messages within three seconds even after cutting me off shows how flimsy her resolve is. How could she even say something like “cutting off” when she’s like this?
I overheard some male classmates talking. “Those two, aren’t they usually fighting?” “Nah, they’re definitely flirting.” “Don’t
stare too much. They might make it into some new play material.”
…Hey, stop it. You’re definitely saying that loud enough for me to hear.
Ahem. I cleared my throat.
“Himari, what’s bothering you?” “ ”
Ah, she’s really planning to ignore me.
How childish. I tossed the snack bag onto my desk. The Yoghurppe carton made a slurping sound as I crushed it in my hand.
“Fine then. I guess our plan to start a specialty shop together is over too.”
“……!?”
For a moment, Himari’s expression changed.
She opened her mouth as if to say something, but in the end, she stayed silent. With a strangely sad expression, she buried her face in her arms on the desk.
The other students’ gazes felt like daggers.
…Well, I get it. From an outsider’s perspective, it definitely looks like I’m bullying her. In situations like this, the “Himari Magic” works in her favor. No one would ever think she’s the one throwing a tantrum and causing trouble.
(…Well, we’ll probably make up soon anyway. Even best friends fight sometimes.)
I looked out the window. The blue sea of Hyūga-nada stretched out along the horizon.
The weather was nice again today. Perfect for flowers. I kinda want to skip school and go buy some bulbs and planters at the flower shop. I want to sweat outside and forget this gloomy feeling.
Buzz. My phone vibrated.
A notification? Maybe a message?
I checked my phone, and it was from Himari. She must’ve finally given in. My habanero strategy worked.
At any rate, we can finally talk now.
Huh? It’s not a LINE message but an email. That’s unusual. And the body of the text is unusually long and formal… Wait, what?
“…A forwarded email to Himari?”
To: Inuzuka Himari-sama. Thank you for contacting us. We are a talent agency…
We are delighted by your positive response. On our end, we will proceed immediately… The specific details will be communicated to you shortly… Depending on the circumstances… By the end of May, we will also consider the procedures for transferring to a high school in Tokyo…
(What the…?)
Could this be the scouting email from the talent agency Himari said she turned down before? A positive response… When was this sent?
…Last night. Right after she declared we were no longer friends. “Hey, Himari!? What’s this about!?”
I stood up without thinking.
The chair hit the desk behind me with a loud thud. The classroom fell silent because of the noise.
Himari’s head turned toward me. Her marine-blue eyes peeked through the gap in her arms.
“…Pfft.”
Himari smiled smugly.
It was like she was saying, “You thought I’d forgive you right away, didn’t you? If you’re gonna apologize, now’s your only chance~?”
“~~~~!?” Ah, crap!
She’s really pissing me off! “Himari, you—”
Just then, our homeroom teacher walked in. Sensing the tension in the room, she frowned. “Natsume. What’s going on?”
“…N-nothing.”
The morning homeroom bell rang right then. As I lifted my chair and sat down, the other students returned to their seats.
After that, Himari didn’t say a single word to me.
♣♣♣
The lunch break bell rang. “…!!”
“…!?”
Himari stood up and dashed out of the classroom like the wind. I was a bit slow to react because I was taking out my convenience store bread from my bag.
I stepped into the hallway, but Himari was already gone.
…She got away again. “Dammit!”
I punched the wall.
It might sound serious, but the truth is, Himari just won’t listen to me.
She’s still leaving my LINE messages on read, and more than anything, it’s embarrassing to be the only one talking to her in class. …I’ve been photographed by classmates at least three times today.
From the other end of the hallway, I heard the sound of slippers
pat-patting toward me. “Y-Yu-kun!”
“Rion-san…”
She seemed flustered. She’s probably been worried about us since the “cutting off” declaration yesterday and came to check on us.
She’s really kind… Wait, no. Don’t run. Specifically, Rion-san’s chest area is bad for my heart, so please walk calmly.
Rion-san caught her breath and spoke. “I just got a LINE from Hii-chan…”
“Seriously!?”
She won’t reply to me, but she messages you!?
I read it. It said something like, “I’m going to Tokyo, so you and Yuu better get along~.” Typical Himari. In the future, she’s totally going to be that annoying adult who meddles in young people’s love lives. …Wait, isn’t that just Saku-neesan?
“Is that what Himari’s going to become? Ugh…”
“Yu-kun!? I don’t really get it, but we need to do something about Hii-chan…!”
Oh, right.
This isn’t the time to worry about Saku-neesan multiplying.
“I’m sorry! It’s my fault for saying I wanted to be the model…” “No, it’s not your fault. Himari’s just being selfish.”
“But…”
Seeing Rion-san look so apologetic made my heart ache. “Anyway, we need to find Himari first…”
“Ah, I have something that might help.” It was a small bag of cookies.
There was no store label on it, so it must’ve been homemade by Rion-san. She’s truly the perfect girl to marry.
“Yu-kun. I think this will work.”
“That’s a good idea. I still have some snacks left from this morning too.”
“Then let’s use them together…” We moved to the school courtyard.
There was a colorful flower bed where Himari and I had planted flowers. We scattered the crushed cookies and snack crumbs around it.
We hid in the shadows and waited for our “prey” to appear. “…She’s not coming.”
“Hmm. Maybe Hii-chan isn’t hungry?”
Some sparrows flew over and started pecking at the ground.
It was so soothing. But feeding wild birds can lead to them sticking around and causing problems with droppings… Ah! The sparrows all flew away at once!
“You two, do you think I’m some kind of wild animal or something!?”
It was Himari.
She was pointing at us from across the courtyard. “Well, you showed up, didn’t you?”
“…!? Crap!” Is she an idiot?
No, we’re just as dumb for doing this. …Wait, could she have been watching us the whole time from a spot where she could see us?
“Himari! Just listen to me!”
“Shut up! I have nothing to say to Yuu!”
“Don’t lie! Then stop with this attention-seeking act!” “Don’t call it an attention-seeking act!!”
I immediately chased after her.
Unfortunately, my stride was much longer than hers. My reflexes were better too. This was one of the few things I had over Himari.
I caught up to her at the landing of the stairs leading to the science room. I grabbed her arm to stop her.
Himari turned her face away from me, breathing heavily. I was panting too. …If any other students saw us, this would definitely be a problem.
“Himari, why are you so mad? Do you really hate Rion-san being the model that much…?”
“…!!”
Himari’s arm moved.
Her right hand slapped my left cheek sharply.
“It’s not about Enocchi! It’s because of how you are, Yuu!” “…What do you mean!?”
That hurt. She really hit me…!
I was really pissed now. Because, seriously, this is all Himari’s fault. Why do I have to get slapped, covered in Calpis, and stared at by the whole class like I’m the bad guy?
Did I do something? You’re the one who started all this unnecessary drama.
You brought Rion-san to Aeon and said you wanted her to be the model, and then you threw a tantrum about not wanting to continue.
On top of that, you suddenly say you’re going to Tokyo…!
At least talk to me about it. Am I really that insignificant to you? Was all that talk about being best friends just a lie? To you, am I just a toy to mess around with?
“I hate your selfishness too!”
I couldn’t help but raise my hand.
I tried to grab Himari’s collar, but I missed slightly. It was her neck instead. …I ended up grabbing her twinflower choker.
I pulled it with all my strength… and the clasp snapped.
…It was a 100-yen store part. It’s not surprising it broke after years of wear. If anything, it’s a miracle it lasted this long.
But the problem was that it fell to the ground… and I stepped on it. The sensation immediately gave me a bad feeling.
When I lifted my foot… the resin part of the twinflower, shaped like a diamond, had a large crack in it.
Resin is a plastic material… Of course, it can break under strong pressure. And this one had a lot of air bubbles, making it a flawed piece. Its durability was always questionable.
“Himari. This is…” “Move your foot!!”
“Guh!?”
It was a fierce headbutt.
It hit my chin perfectly. I staggered and crouched down… Himari picked up the broken choker, her face pale and trembling.
“N-no way. This can’t be…” “ ”
Her expression was full of anguish. Seeing her look like it was the end of the world, I felt an indescribable anger welling up inside me.
…What the hell.
What do you even want?
You say you’re cutting me off, but then you make that face just because your accessory broke.
…Ah, I see.
In the end, the accessory was more important to you, huh? Well, you did say that from the start. Our friendship or whatever was never a big deal to you, was it?
That’s why you can throw it away so easily, right? If it’s just the accessory, you can always order a new one online. Or… there are plenty of other replacements, right?
…It’s really stupid of me to think I was the only one who cared about you.
“Forget it. Go to Tokyo or wherever you want. To you, I’m just an accessory creator who does whatever you say, right?”
“…!?”
Himari’s expression twisted. She stared at me as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Her lips trembled.
Then, a single tear rolled down her cheek.
“…That’s what you are.” “Huh?”
Her unexpected rebuttal left me speechless. Me? Did I do something?
Himari roughly wiped her eyes.
“You only see me as a convenient backstage helper who does whatever you say, don’t you?”
“T-that’s not…”
“No? Then why did you make Enocchi the exclusive model? The right to wear your accessories first—why did you give that to
someone else? …We promised it would be mine!” I couldn’t find the words.
I wanted to deny it. I don’t see Himari as just some disposable person.
…But given the current situation, her words weren’t wrong.
Back in our second year of middle school, at the cultural festival. At the Mos Burger after-party. Himari definitely said it.
“So, can you show that passionate look only to me? Let me have you all to myself? If you do, I’ll sell your accessories as much as you want. Let’s become… a community bound by fate.”
The one who broke the promise first… was me. Misinterpreting my silence, Himari laughed mockingly.
“You like Enocchi, don’t you? That’s why you want her to be first, right? I get it. I know about love too. I’ve experienced it. I want to support you, Yuu. I want to bless Enocchi too. But, but…”
Himari clenched the broken twinflower choker.
“I can’t be satisfied with being second best!!” Himari shouted.
It was emotional, unlike the usual Himari. …Or maybe she’s always been like this, and I just never noticed.
“Yuu has always put me first. But now it’s different, isn’t it? He doesn’t even try to look at my feelings properly, and yet he expects me to just smile and forgive him…!!”
“…………”
I couldn’t say anything.
There were things I wanted to say. Like how Himari has her bad points too, or how it’s weird to get angry without even talking things out. There were a lot of things.
But my mouth wouldn’t move.
I knew I didn’t have the right to say anything to Himari. “I’ll go to someone who actually needs me!!”
“……!?”
Himari swung her arm.
The broken twinflower choker hit my chest and fell to the ground. All I could do was watch her back as she walked away.
♣♣♣
…I wish life had a reset button.
Thinking that, I slumped in the courtyard. Sitting on a bag of fertilizer in the corner, I nibbled on a convenience store bread.
The crumbs from the snacks I’d scattered earlier were being swarmed by sparrows again.
The sparrows all flew away at once. Himari… oh, it’s Makishima.
“Na-ha-ha! Seeing you make such a blatantly disgusted face brings me nothing but joy!”
Makishima held a yakisoba bread and a croquette bread, both bought from the school store, and spread his arms dramatically.
…This guy, he’s always eating these two.
“If you hadn’t said those weird things at Kanda River, this wouldn’t have happened…”
“That’s just you shifting the blame. Sooner or later, this was bound to happen, wasn’t it?”
“…………”
He hit the mark. Yeah, that’s right. I was just lashing out.
As long as I kept misunderstanding Himari, the wounds would only grow beneath the surface.
“What do you want?”
“Just came to see the fruits of my labor. Got a problem with that?”
“I’ve got nothing but problems. Can’t you just leave me alone?” “That’s not happening. Rion-chan asked me to check on you!”
Makishima sat down next to me and took a bite of his yakisoba bread.
He also handed me a Yoghurppe. …I took it without protest. My mouth was dry anyway. This expired bread really is the worst for lunch.
“Why did you tell me to make Enomoto-san my exclusive model?”
“If I didn’t, Rion-chan wouldn’t have had a chance. If Natsume got taken away like that, I wouldn’t have been able to do anything. I just wanted to block the escape route before it turned into a myth like the Ame-no-Iwato.”
“Why? I get that you’re supporting Enomoto-san, but what does taking the model position from Himari have to do with it?”
“Do you really think that? You’re so naive, Natsume.” Makishima chuckled.
“Let’s say Rion-chan became your girlfriend. Even then, it wouldn’t mean she’s cleared her quest.”
“Why not?”
“You know the answer to that, don’t you?”
Makishima said cryptically, taking another bite of his yakisoba bread.
“Goals are harder to maintain than to achieve. Love is the same. Even if she gets you, it’s meaningless if it falls apart halfway.”
“When you say it, it sounds so convincing…”
“I’m speechless. …I do want things to work out, but it’s not going as smoothly as I’d hoped.”
“Wait, are you serious?”
“Of course. Who wouldn’t want to avoid getting hurt?” “…True.”
His words carried a strange weight. …Now that I think about it, this guy’s always in the middle of some drama.
Makishima let out a small sigh.
“Put yourself in Rion-chan’s shoes. Even if she gets you, it’d be heartbreaking to see you and Himari-chan getting along so well right next to her. So, before she gets you, she needs to clearly establish who comes first.”
“But Himari and I are just friends…” Makishima burst out laughing.
“Funny. Then why are you so shaken up?” His words stabbed deep.
Satisfied with my reaction, he leaned in and poked my chest like he always does.
“Listen. ‘Like’ and ‘love’ are essentially the same root of
affection. People just dress it up as ‘friendship’ or ‘romance’ to suit their own convenience. That’s why it’s so easy for those
feelings to shift with the slightest change. Lately, you’ve been seeing Himari-chan as more than just a friend, haven’t you?”
“Ugh…”
I dropped my convenience store bread. …He hit the nail on the head.
“H-how did you know…”
“If that weren’t the case, you wouldn’t be making all these excuses not to date Rion-chan. What you’re worried about isn’t her feelings, but the guilt of being attracted to Himari-chan. As a love master, I’d never miss something like that.”
“You’re just a playboy jerk…”
“Na-ha-ha. I’ll take that as a compliment.”
Makishima handed me the rest of his croquette bread. Like he was offering it as a replacement for the one I dropped.
“Forget about love or friendship or any of those vague things. The most important thing is who matters most to you.”
“Next, you’re going to try to manipulate me, huh? Aren’t you on Enomoto-san’s side?”
“Of course, I’m on Rion-chan’s side. Sorry, but I don’t have an ounce of sentimentality for my ex from middle school.”
“Then why? If you’re supporting Enomoto-san, wouldn’t it be better if Himari just went to Tokyo?”
It wasn’t that simple. Makishima, unusually, sighed awkwardly. He clasped his hands and groaned softly.
“I did suggest making Rion-chan the exclusive model to break up you and Himari-chan. But I clearly went too far. Honestly, I
didn’t expect this kind of miscalculation.”
“Miscalculation? You mean Himari deciding to go to Tokyo?”
“Yeah. Normally, if things get strained, people just quietly distance themselves. That would’ve been the right balance. But this time, Himari-chan’s actions are like saying, ‘If I don’t leave my hometown, I can’t forget Natsume.’ …Who could’ve guessed that carefree Himari-chan had such intense feelings hidden
away?”
“…………”
I understood those words.
The broken twinflower choker in my pocket. I remembered when she threw it at me.
Second place isn’t enough… huh.
I never thought Himari would say something like that to me. Makishima stood up and stretched. He turned to me and chuckled.
“If Himari-chan disappears like this, Rion-chan will blame herself, won’t she? That girl’s like she stepped out of a romance manga. I just don’t want to see such a sweet childhood friend
suffer.”
“…………”
“Oh, you look skeptical. Well, I can’t blame you. To put it mildly, I’m not exactly known for my good nature. I’ve made countless women cry. So, for me to suddenly talk about loyalty to a
childhood friend…”
He was rambling, but I wasn’t listening.
I’ve always wondered why I get along with Makishima. Honestly, I only needed Himari as a friend. Makishima and I don’t even share the same values.
But for some reason, I want to talk to him. No matter what he says, it doesn’t feel annoying. I think I finally understand why.
…We’re similar. Especially in how we misunderstand our own true nature. That’s why I can’t just leave him alone.
“Makishima, you’re actually kind of nice…” “…Huh?”
Makishima’s face turned red.
“I-I’m not nice! Don’t mess with me!”
“I mean, I didn’t expect such a serious reaction…” I don’t want to see a guy’s embarrassed face.
For just this moment, I wish I could swap faces with Enomoto- san.
“Hmph. Sometimes, Natsume, you show this rebellious side. Once you start dating Rion-chan and officially become my brother-in-law, I’ll straighten that out for you!”
“What are you even talking about!?”
“Na-ha-ha. Well, do as you please. It’s not a bad idea to let Himari-chan go and end up with Rion-chan. Like I’ve said many times, Rion-chan is top-tier girlfriend material.”
With that, Makishima left.
His back looked oddly cheerful as he walked away. “You really are nice…”
If you put it that way, he knows I’ll try to stop Himari. Even if it’s to ease Enomoto-san’s guilt, you can’t say he’s not being kind.
“But if it were that easy, I wouldn’t be struggling…”
The bell for the end of lunch rang. I had to get back to class.
…Sitting next to Himari in the afternoon in this state is going to be so awkward.
♣♣♣
The afternoon class started.
Himari and I sat next to each other, tapping our desks with the caps of our mechanical pencils. Both of us are the type who can’t skip class, so the awkwardness was unbearable.
The teacher adjusted his glasses and said,
“Inuzuka-san. Natsume-kun. …Did something happen?” “「What do you mean?」”
The moment we harmonized, we glared at each other.
The teacher wiped the sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief.
“W-well, you’re usually so loud I have to tell you to quiet down. But today, you’re unusually quiet, aren’t you?”
“「Is that a problem?」”
We harmonized again.
This guy’s really annoying. Stop copying me. “…W-well, make up soon, okay?”
“「That’s not happening.」”
I glanced at Himari, and our eyes met for a moment.
We both looked away with a “Hmph.” The teacher shivered.
…Himari’s eyes were a little red.
Not that I care. Don’t push the blame on me for her crying.
(Even if you tell me to do as I please…)
It’s not like I’m in a position to choose.
If Himari wants to go to Tokyo, then she can do as she pleases. It’s not like I’m paying her living expenses or rent.
I can’t keep relying on Himari forever either.
Himari always says she’ll manage until she’s 30, but who can stay with someone for that long? It’s impossible.
It’s like with accessories.
Unless you get married, you can’t share that much time with someone.
So, the time to part will come eventually. Whether Himari goes to college, gets a boyfriend, or gets married. That future isn’t far off, and the separation will come.
It’s just happening a little sooner than expected.
…Moving at the end of May is way too soon, though.
It’s almost Golden Week, so there’s less than a month left.
I’ve never been scouted by a talent agency, so I don’t know, but is this how it usually goes? Well, beauty fades fast, so I get why
they’re in a hurry.
I took out my phone and sent a message.
『Are you really going?』
It was read in three seconds. …You’re supposed to be paying attention in class.
『I’m going.』
『Why?』
『I want to visualize my own value.』
Visualize my value… as expected, she knows such complicated words.
I kind of understand what she means. She wants proof that she’s needed.
Another message from Himari came in.
『I don’t think Yuu would understand.』
…I do understand. I’ve been making accessories alone for so long.
No one understood me, no one saw me, and no one needed me.
(…I see. It’s all my fault.)
The first person who needed my accessories was Himari.
Thanks to Himari, my accessories came to life, and thanks to her, they became known. And that day, I promised to keep making accessories for her.
If I break that promise, this outcome is only natural.
『Are you really not going to Tokyo?』
『No.』
『I’ll beg on my knees to turn down Enomoto-san’s modeling offer.』
『Onii-chan said it. Men are creatures that repeat the same mistakes.』
『Can’t argue with that.』
『Then this conversation is over.』
I put my phone back in my pocket.
Himari is stubborn. Once she decides something, she won’t change her mind easily.
So, no matter what I say, the result won’t change. Himari will go to Tokyo, and she’ll probably become popular. …Well, I don’t know what she’ll become, but…
Whether I’m with her or not, that future will happen.
(…Then, there’s nothing I can do.)
It can’t be helped.
This kind of ending can’t be helped. Life doesn’t go the way you want.
And if it doesn’t go the way you want… then I have to seize my ideal future with my own strength.
♢♢♢
Pfft—ha!
Yuu’s such an idiot.
As if I’d go to Tokyo.
Why would I want to live somewhere without Ojii-chan or Onii- chan? I don’t have any dissatisfaction with my life that makes me want to be surrounded by fans I don’t even know.
I love my hometown.
Even if it’s the countryside, they say “home is where the heart is,” right?
Sure, it takes an hour by train to get to the nearest Aeon Mall to watch the latest movies, but planning trips with Yuu is fun. And while there’s no delicious Harajuku pancake shop, Enocchi’s cakes are a million times better.
Yuu’s so annoying. It’s not like I’m some easy girl who jumps at every scout’s offer.
(Well, that fake crying earlier seemed to work…)
This is one of my ultimate “begging techniques.”
If I do this, everyone listens to me. It’s my ultimate weapon for manipulating Ojii-chan and Onii-chan. I’ve never shown it to Yuu before, but it’s my strongest move. Even Yuu can’t stay calm after this.
…I mean, it’s totally fake crying, okay? There’s no way I’d really cry over something like Yuu’s accessory breaking… I have plenty of his accessories anyway…
Ugh…
Stop, stop! Don’t think about that! If I cry in class, it’ll just make Yuu more full of himself. He’ll probably smirk and say, “Hah.
You really like me too much, don’t you?” …So annoying! It’s not like I like him or anything!?
(Ugh, my neck feels so cold! …I’ll definitely make him make me a new one later.)
Anyway… hee-hee.
The damage to Yuu is severe. He’s finally realized how great and important I am. Serves him right.
Now, all I have to do is wait for him to come crawling back. I’ll look down on him as he tearfully begs, “Please don’t go,
Himari-sama!” and I’ll laugh, “Oh-ho-ho! Yuu-kun, you’re so hopeless. Fine, let’s make a deal!”
First, I’ll set up a “Himari-sama Appreciation Day” once a month. On this day, Yuu has to do everything I say with all his heart and soul.
And then the flower accessories. Of course, from now on, he’ll only make them for me. Enocchi can model too, but I come first. I’m the First Lady, okay?
Also, I’ll introduce a “trial kiss” system. From now on, Yuu can’t refuse if I demand a trial kiss. It’s his punishment for hurting a maiden’s heart. No refusal allowed, whether at school or Aeon!
…I feel like the point is getting lost, but whatever!
(People can become so cruel when victory is in sight… I’m scary. I’m really scary… pfft.)
Watching Yuu’s despairing face, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction.
The class ended, and it was after school.
Well? He’s coming soon, right? Knowing Yuu, he’ll probably say, “Himari, can we talk?” and call me out. I’ll wait for him to come back, I guess.
…Huh?
Before I knew it, Yuu was gone from the seat next to me. His bag was gone too. …When did he leave?
“Hey, do you know where Yuu went?”
I asked a classmate who was still in the classroom, but they just said, “He left earlier.”
…Well, it’s Yuu, after all.
That guy’s such a crybaby. He probably needs some time alone to cry over losing me.
Fine, I’ll forgive him! That part of Yuu is kind of cute, so I don’t hate it. Cry your heart out!
And then it was the weekend.
I expected him to come crying to me by now.
I kept checking my phone, all dressed up in case Yuu called me out.
…He didn’t come.
That’s weird. Was he that shocked?
On Sunday night, I checked Facebook and Twitter. The “you” account… no changes.
I see, I must’ve been mistaken.
My declaration about going to Tokyo must’ve been more shocking to Yuu than I thought, huh?
That cute little guy. I’ll forgive him!
Well, let’s check Enocchi’s Twitter account while I’m at it. She posts pictures of sweets so often, it’s adorable.
She never follows me back, but as long as I can see her posts, I don’t care!
(…Huh?)
There was a photo.
A double cone from Baskin-Robbins at Aeon. As expected of the heir to a Western confectionery shop, she’s always checking out new flavors.
The problem was, there were two cones in the picture. Enocchi’s hand and someone else’s hand were in the shot.
…That’s Yuu’s hand.
There’s no way I’d mistake it. That rugged men’s ring he wears for special occasions? I bought that for him. And she wrote,
“Went flower shopping with a school friend!” The only person who’d go flower shopping with Enocchi on a weekend is Yuu.
…The next Monday. I couldn’t sleep until morning and ended up being late to school for the first time. It was so embarrassing.
Especially Yuu’s cold stare that seemed to say, “What’s wrong with her?” hurt so much.
And then Golden Week started and ended. During that time… nothing really happened.
After the break, the new accessory for “Koi” was posted on Instagram without me. Enocchi’s stunning photos also got a lot of likes.
Comments like “New model!?” and “She’s so cute!” were everywhere, but Yuu didn’t reply to any of them. …Well, that was usually my job anyway.
This time, there were also photos of the production process.
They introduced the new eat-in corner at Enocchi’s Western confectionery shop. There were photos of Enocchi and regular customers having fun.
Yuu was in one of them, eating cake with complete focus. …Even though he never agreed to eat with me when I invited him.
There was even a close-up of Makishima-kun. So, he’s the one who replaced me. How annoying. If this guy hadn’t said those
weird things, things wouldn’t have gotten so messed up. That provocative smile of his was definitely meant for me to see. …I should report this photo for violating the rules.
Even after school started again, Yuu didn’t change at all. …With less than a month left, he still wouldn’t talk to me.
One afternoon, he was busily harvesting flowers from the school courtyard’s flowerbed.
Enocchi was helping him, and they looked like they were having fun. Seeing their relationship grow so smoothly hurt. They were probably making beautiful flower accessories together right now.
…It really feels like there’s no place for me anymore.
(It’s fine, it’s fine. There’s still about two weeks left…)
I mean, I’m super cute, right? If I go to Tokyo, I’ll definitely be super popular, right? He’s probably just intimidated because I’m too out of his league.
…Hey, are you really okay with this? Isn’t he being a little too obedient?
I’m really going to leave, you know? Shouldn’t he be begging me to stay by now?
…Then, I suddenly remembered. Yuu’s words at Kanda River.
“Also, even if I keep making themed accessories like this… if you keep messing around like that, it’s kind of annoying, you know?”
That’s right. Wake up, Himari.
You got rejected once, remember?
There’s no way he’d go out of his way to stop a troublesome girl like me…
Mid-May.
The weather had been gloomy, and rainy days were becoming more frequent. The hydrangeas in our mansion’s garden were blooming beautifully.
Back in middle school, Yuu and I used to make really cute necklaces out of these.
By the way, their flower language is “fickleness,” “infidelity,”
and “transience”… Haha, I feel like crying.
My steps were heavy. When I opened the front door, the cold, empty house greeted me. Mom wasn’t home today, I guess.
“I’m home…”
When I entered the kitchen, Onii-chan had already come home, which was rare. He was silently drinking coffee while reading the evening paper.
…Judging by the fact that he was still in his suit, he was probably thinking about work. You can tell what this guy’s thinking by his clothes.
It’s better to leave him alone at times like this. Onii-chan might seem like an idiot, but he’s apparently really busy with work.
I washed my hands, gargled, and poured myself some coffee. I also borrowed a Baumkuchen from the table. Probably something Mom got from the women’s association. She’s really busy with neighborhood stuff.
…Just as I was thinking that, Onii-chan looked up from the paper.
He finally noticed me. He smiled gently and spoke in his usual kind tone.
“Himari. Welcome back.”
“I’m home, Onii-chan.”
“Mom’s still out in the fields. There’s curry in the pot for dinner, so help yourself.”
“Okay~”
No wonder it smelled so good. Hehe. Spicy curry to heal my heart.
Should I eat it with bread or rice? I’m feeling fancy today, so
maybe I’ll toast some bread and eat it crispy. Oh, I think we have a whole loaf of bread? Maybe I’ll hollow it out and make a Chicago-style curry gratin…
“By the way, Himari. You haven’t been talking about Yuu-kun lately.”
“…!?”
My hand stopped.
Crap. I was caught off guard and flustered. Onii-chan definitely noticed.
Calm down, Himari. It’s not a fatal blow yet. Just act natural, report it cutely, and it’ll be fine.
Onii-chan will probably say something like, “That’s tough. Here’s 10,000 yen, go buy some ice cream or something.
Hahaha.” …Wait, is my image of being rich too vague?
“Ah, well, we kinda had a fight, you know? But it’s not a big deal…”
“Hoh. It’s rare for you two to fight.”
“Ahaha. Yeah, it’s rare, but these things happen, right?”
“True. These things happen. Youth is all about things not going smoothly.”
Yes, Onii-chan bought it.
Relieved, I placed the loaf of bread on the cutting board.
I’ll hollow this out, pour in the curry, add lots of cheese…
“By the way, what’s this ‘not a big deal’ fight that’s kept you from talking for over two weeks?”
“…!?”
I accidentally dropped the bread knife. It narrowly missed my legs and stuck into the floor. …Wait, this is a bread knife. Is our house too old or something?
I turned around to see Onii-chan smiling.
It felt like he was saying, “Did you really think you could deceive my handsome eyes with such a flimsy act? …Hah, foolish.”
“Ah, ah, yeah…?”
“Haha. It’s simple, Himari. The Yuu-kun essence I sense from you has been rapidly declining over the past two weeks. Recently, it’s completely dried up, and there’s been no replenishment.
Unless something happened to Yuu-kun, it means you’re being avoided, right?”
How does he know!?
Is Yuu essence something you can see!?
“W-well, as expected of Onii-chan. You’re not my brother for nothing…”
“Of course. For my future brother-in-law, I’ve been working tirelessly to make this town a better place to live.”
I honestly thought, “Ugh, gross.” That’s why Onii-chan, despite being handsome and having a good personality, can’t get a girlfriend.
Onii-chan, still radiating a mysterious sparkly aura, pressed me for an explanation.
“So, what happened?”
“Uh, well, Onii-chan, isn’t it a bit much to meddle in your little sister’s private life…”
“The fact that you’re not being honest with me means there’s something you don’t want me to know, right? And that also means… you’re admitting that you’re at fault here, Himari.”
S-so sharp…
As expected of Onii-chan, he knows me so well.
“Spit it out.” “…Ugh!”
The pressure from his smile was intense.
This part of him is totally inherited from Ojii-chan. I forced a smile and stammered.
“I-I got rejected by Yuu, and out of spite, I lied about going to Tokyo, and now I’m waiting for him to apologize…”
“…………”
Onii-chan stared at me expressionlessly.
I could hear the gears in his head turning rapidly. With just those words, he pieced
“You absolute idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Our mansion shook with the force of his roar.
It’s really shaking! It feels like a typhoon hit! It’s so scary, really scary…!
As I froze in fear, Onii-chan slammed one foot onto the table. Striking a pose like a monster, he glared at me and let out a roar.
“You’re trying to force Yuu-kun into a situation where he has no choice but to apologize, just so you can push your own demands,
huh!? What you’re doing isn’t your usual begging—it’s extortion! Have some shame as a member of the Inuzuka family!!”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…!!”
I sat seiza-style and bowed my head deeply.
It was the absolute truth. There was no room for argument. Onii- chan hates underhanded tactics like this…!
“What if this negatively affects Yuu-kun’s mental state!? It’d be a huge loss for the world!”
Letting out a rough breath as if spewing the last of his fire, Onii- chan sat back down at the table.
Tap, tap. He knocked on the table opposite him. It was a signal: Sit here. Lecture time. And then die. I obediently sat across from him and shrunk into myself.
“Himari. Are you planning to break your promise to me?” “Ugh…”
His voice was quieter now.
But that only made it sharper, like a blade piercing straight into my stomach…
“Back during the middle school cultural festival, you made me bow my head to that Enomoto. You made me kneel, lick her heels, and even had her sing Nishino Kana’s songs passionately in front of me. That level of humiliation is something I’ve never experienced, even in my professional life!”
“But for Onii-chan, that was like a reward, right…?”
“I said that only applies to 2D!! You’re not reflecting at all, are you!?”
I’m sorry, I’m sorry!
My mouth just moves on its own!
“I-I know you and Enocchi’s older sister are mortal enemies…!”
“Exactly. I only did it because you begged me with your life on the line. I had Enomoto promote it on Twitter and even got as many friends and juniors as possible to spread the word. All to sell nearly 200 accessories!”
Onii-chan rubbed his arms irritably. Probably remembering that time gave him goosebumps…
“But the reason I helped was because I fell in love with Yuu- kun’s accessories myself. They’re amazing. One day, they’ll make this town’s name known worldwide!”
“See? Onii-chan has good taste too…”
Hearing Yuu’s accessories being praised, my cheeks relaxed into a smile.
Onii-chan noticed immediately and glared at me. …Bad, bad.
“Himari. Do you remember the condition I set for helping you sell out Yuu-kun’s accessories?”
“…T-to never give up on supporting Yuu’s specialty shop.”
“That’s right. Back then, Yuu-kun was undoubtedly at a crossroads in his life. And with your selfishness, you took away every other option from his life except becoming an accessory creator, didn’t you?”
Another absolute truth.
…That’s right. If Yuu’s accessories hadn’t sold out back then, his dream of opening a specialty shop would’ve vanished. But on the flip side, achieving the goal his parents set—selling 100 accessories—meant that every other escape route in Yuu’s life was closed off.
Even if he got tired of it later, time wouldn’t turn back. There’d be no way for him to become a degree-focused civil servant, and I
can’t imagine that socially awkward Yuu climbing the corporate ladder at a regular company.
Even if the shop opened, there’s a chance it could fail due to poor sales. What’d be left wouldn’t just be the remnants of a dream, but a mountain of debt that couldn’t be repaid easily. Since our
family owns land, I’ve seen plenty of such cases since I was a kid. Dreams are harder to maintain than to achieve.
That’s why Onii-chan made me promise.
To never touch the Inuzuka family’s money and to support Yuu’s shop with my own strength for the rest of my life. Back then, I was all like, “Hehe. It’ll be a breeze for cute little me, right?”
…But I never imagined the plan would unravel like this.
Onii-chan’s eyes gleamed sharply. He leaned over the table and stared straight into my face.
“Himari. I wasn’t giving you special treatment. I helped you because I believed it would ultimately benefit Yuu-kun. You
weren’t thinking, ‘If I get bored, I can just throw it all away,’ like some trashy pet owner, were youuuuuuuuuu!?”
“No, no, no…! That’s not it at all…!”
“Then what’s this mess? You’re abandoning your support for Yuu-kun just because something didn’t go your way. Did you think I wouldn’t check Instagram? It’s fine that Enomoto’s little sister is modeling, but why aren’t you responding to customers? That’s your job, and neglecting it is interfering with Yuu-kun’s accessory production, don’t you get thattttttttt!?”
“Ughhh…!”
It seems he’d been fully aware of the trouble on my end from the start.
In fact, he probably set up this conversation just to confirm it. Ah, Onii-chan loves Yuu so much that I’m in trouble now…!

“B-buh i-ish Yuu-kun’s fault…!”
“Not bad! Your romantic feelings and your responsibility for the flower accessories are separate issues! If you’ve got time to whine here, why don’t you go apologize already!!”
I bit my lip. I crumpled my skirt in my hands.
Onii-chan doesn’t understand. He doesn’t understand my feelings at all. He just overwhelms me with his logical arguments.
But there are things that logic can’t fix. “Then what about my feelings…!?”
I ended up shouting.
Crying pathetically… for the first time in my life, I rebelled against Onii-chan.
“I’ve fallen for Yuu! There’s no way we can go back to being just friends now! Are you telling me to just give up, Onii-chan!? To just watch him get all lovey-dovey with Enocchi!?”
Onii-chan stared at me silently. Those calm eyes, which I usually found reassuring, were terrifying now.
Then he said coldly,
“That’s right. You should give up on those feelings.” “……!?”
I almost stood up.
At that moment—he glared at me sharply. Instantly, my body froze, and I slumped back into the chair. …I was like a frog stared
down by a snake. Onii-chan’s skills have clearly become inhuman since he started working at the city office.
“Don’t get emotional. Listen to me until the end.” “Y-yes, Brother…!”
I’ll listen properly. …Even if I try to run, he’ll just tie me up with rope and make me listen anyway.
“What’s most important to you, Himari? Those feelings? Or… getting Yuu-kun for yourself?”
“……………. ?????”
Huh? What does that mean?
Aren’t they the same thing? They’re the same…
“Himari. Life is finite. No matter how much money you have, no matter how good you are at begging, it’s impossible to get
everything you want at once.”
Then, abruptly, he started talking about his own life. As I sat there confused, Onii-chan continued.
“I built highways. But in exchange, I took away many people’s precious things. I demolished a family’s home full of memories. Some lands lost sunlight because of the elevated roads. I received a lot of criticism. Even now, the voices of criticism far outweigh the voices of gratitude.”
I listened in shock.
…It was the first time Onii-chan had talked about his work.
Whenever I asked, he’d always brush me off with, “It’s too early for you, Himari.”
“But it was absolutely necessary for the future of this town a hundred years from now. I’m doing something that will benefit this town even after I’m gone.”
Then, he added quietly,
“You should live your life like that too. Throw away 99 things and win the one thing that matters most. That’s how you win.”
“…………”
Then, Onii-chan fell silent again, his eyes dropping to the evening paper. His expression, which had been so fierce earlier, was now as calm as still water.
…To be honest.
I didn’t fully understand what Onii-chan was saying.
But I thought it must be right. He’s experienced so much more than I have. After all, Onii-chan went through the same kind of youth as me.
Onii-chan wouldn’t say anything that wasn’t for my benefit.
So, even though I don’t fully understand now… I decided to give up on everything only when I finally understand and still can’t accept it.
♢♢♢
It was the next day after school.
I was in the classroom, staring at my phone.
I had the LINE app open, on the chat screen with Yuu. I kept typing and deleting messages over and over.
Calling Yuu out… that’s fine, but how? It’s been three weeks since our last chat. Scrolling-wise, it feels like yesterday, but there’s a Mariana Trench-level gap in those few centimeters…
Well, I’ll just keep it light, like usual.
『Hey, Yuu. How’s it going~? (This is a pun on Yuu and “you”♡ Did you notice??? Lol) You haven’t been talking to me lately~.
I’m so lonely~ (Boo hoo)』
Who even writes like that?
I sound like some one-hit-wonder comedian who shows up on TV periodically and then disappears. “Lol???” isn’t even a thing. …I must be so desperate to talk to Yuu that my brain’s glitching.
Delete, delete.
If I sent that, he’d definitely read it and ignore me. I’d do the same.
I need to be a bit more serious. I’ve got something important to say.
『Yuu, we need to talk. It’s important.』
I sent the message with a whoosh.
Now, while I wait for a reply… oh, it’s been read in three seconds. Too fast.
What’s this? Do you like me that much~? Always checking LINE, huh? Couldn’t resist opening it right away, could you? Hehe, you’re so embarrassing~.
…I feel like a boomerang just flew back at me, but whatever! Let’s see, Yuu’s reply is…
『I’ve got something to talk about too. I’m in the science room.』
…………Unreadable.
Yuu’s way too calm, isn’t he? Shouldn’t he be more shaken up? It’s a message from the cutest girl in the world, me!
Well, whatever. …Let’s go.
It’s about a five-minute walk to the science room. I’ve walked it so many times, I’m confident I could get there with my eyes closed.
I looked up at the science room door and took a deep breath. This is bad, I’m getting nervous.
My stomach suddenly hurts too. Maybe I should just give up. It doesn’t have to be today. Besides, what does Yuu even want to talk about?
…Oh, maybe it’s “I’m dating Enomoto-san now” or something like that?
That’s totally possible. In fact, I can’t think of anything else. It’s been three weeks, after all. They must’ve met up a bunch of times in that period… Right? They even ate Baskin-Robbins
together…
This is bad. I can’t take it. To be specific, I can’t stand the
thought of Yuu smiling brightly and saying, “Himari, you’re like a love cupid. Thanks, my best☆friend (teeth sparkling)” …Wait, who even talks like that? If Yuu ever acts like that, I’ll gladly hand him over!
For now, I’ll make a strategic retreat and rethink my plan… “Himari, what are you doing?”
“Wah!?”
He came from behind!
I turned around, and there stood Yuu, looking just like he did during sixth period.
…Enocchi wasn’t with him. He seemed to be alone. “Himari. Stop standing there and come in already.”
“O-okay…”
I entered the science room.
It looked the same as always. Well, maybe a little different.
There were stacks of cardboard boxes on the table. Inside them were beautifully processed accessories made from the flowers in the garden. They were ready to be shipped to customers.
The steel shelves were wide open, and they were completely empty. The LED planters, the tools for processing the accessories—everything was neatly packed into the boxes.
…It looked like he was preparing to move. “So, what did you want to talk about, Himari?” “……!?”
He jumped straight to the point, and my body shrank back.
Yuu was organizing the cardboard boxes, not even looking at me. His attitude was kind of frustrating.
…I see. My important talk isn’t even worth making eye contact for, huh?
Suddenly, my irritation came rushing back. I wanted to break that damn calm attitude of his, so I smiled brightly… and lied again.
“Hehe. It’s not a big deal, but… you know that talent agency
thing? It’s moving forward, so I thought I’d let you know. They came to my house to greet me, and the conditions are really good. They’re even preparing an apartment for me, and they’ll handle all the transportation. Oh, and the person in charge is super handsome. City guys really have a different vibe, don’t they~?”
Ahhhhhhhh!!
Why!? I already turned down that email! I’m really just a cringy person, aren’t I!?
…Well, it’s not a complete lie. The conditions they offered are real, at least.
And Yuu’s reply was… just one word. “…I see. That’s great.”
Ouch.
He didn’t even look at me. He just silently kept organizing the boxes.
…Really, that’s it? Don’t you have anything else to say?
Ah, this is so stupid. Of course. After all, he did say I was “annoying.” I must’ve been mistaken.
…We’ve already reached a point of no return, haven’t we? “Wh-what did you want to talk about, Yuu?”
I asked in a desperate tone.
Finally, Yuu looked up. He turned to face me. “Well, there’s something I wanted to give you…” “…To me?”
“Yeah, before you go to Tokyo, there’s something I really need to do…”
As he said that, he pulled a brown envelope from his uniform pocket. It was the kind sold at our school store. He held it out to me with a detached expression.
…It feels like a letter?
What is this? It’s pretty thick. Could it be… a divorce notice?
…Ah, I see. Yuu’s so meticulous, after all. Maybe he wants to split the profits or something.
That’s kind of a shock. Is that how he sees me? I don’t need money or anything. Thinking that, I checked the contents.
『Withdrawal Notice』
The air froze.
As I stood there, completely lost in thought, Yuu muttered, “Ah,” and snatched it back, putting it in his pocket.
“Whoops. That’s not the one…”
“Wait, wait, wait!! What was that!? Hey, Yuu! What’s with that ominous document!?”
“Well, I don’t really know the proper way to withdraw, so I just threw something together. I bought the envelope at the school
store earlier, but maybe I should get a proper one…” “I’m not questioning the quality of the envelope!!” Yuu looked at my face and burst out laughing.
“It’s rare for you to snap back like that.”
“It’s because you’re saying such stupid things!”
Sensing that I was genuinely angry, Yuu awkwardly averted his gaze.
“I’m thinking of dropping out of school too.” “ ”
It was so… unexpected that I was left speechless. Why?
Why is Yuu dropping out?
Just because I said I’m going to Tokyo, why is Yuu dropping out of school too…?
“I’m going to Tokyo too. I’ll follow you, Himari.” “Y-you’ll… follow me?”
Does that mean… huh?
What’s going on? I don’t get it at all.
Oh, is it because of our old partnership? Does he want to check out the talent agency I’m joining? Or is he planning to come to Tokyo for sightseeing with me? No, no, if that’s the case, dropping out of school is weird. He could just come during summer break or something.
…No, I actually do understand. He’s preparing to move without even selling new accessories, and he’s hurriedly harvesting and processing the flowers from the garden.
But… it’s a lie, right? That can’t be real… “Yuu. Are you serious…?”
Yuu nodded clearly.
“Makishima told me to decide what’s most important. …I think it’s you, Himari.”
Those words sank heavily into my stomach.
As I stood there speechless, Yuu continued without hesitation.
“The main reason I went to high school was because of my parents’ wishes, but the biggest reason was to be with you,
Himari. But they won’t forgive me for this. My mom will
probably disown me, and I’ll have to figure out how to make a living.”
“Wh-what about Enocchi? You just reunited with her…” Yuu frowned.
His usual stoic face was hard to read, but this expression was oddly childish. He spoke slowly, making sure not to be misunderstood.
“Himari, you’ve got the wrong idea. Sure, she’s my first love, and she’s really cute. But that doesn’t mean… she’s more important than my best friend now.”
He added that last part, his face turning red.
He tried to hide it by covering his mouth with his hand, but it didn’t work at all.
…He’s serious.
The moment I realized that, my face flushed with heat.
“You’re going to throw everything away… to follow me?”
“Well, I don’t have a choice. I sowed the seeds myself. …Oh, speaking of seeds?”
“That’s not funny at all. Don’t ever say that again.” “…Sorry.”
Yuu looked genuinely dejected.
…I really hate this part of him, where he can’t read the mood.
“Yuu, you make it sound so easy to just work. …What if you can’t make flower accessories anymore?”
“But if I cling to that, I’ll lose you, Himari. Even if I make the best flower accessories in the world… they’d be meaningless without you.”
He said that, looking straight at me.
“What about you, Himari? If I can’t make flower accessories, do I still have a place with you?”
“……!”
That’s unfair.
If he says it like that, I can’t stop him.
Is there a place for Yuu with me, even without flower accessories?
…Of course there is. There’s so much.
I love spending afternoons with Yuu, borrowing manga from each other.
I love the time we spend watching YouTube on one phone.
I love stopping by Mos Burger on the way home from school and fighting over onion rings.
I love taking the train with Yuu to the big Aeon Mall in the next town over.
I love riding bikes with Yuu on weekends, looking for Instagram- worthy shops.
And the moment we get lost in a back alley for an hour and laugh, saying, “Oh no, where are we!?”—that’s my favorite.
I’ve known the meaning of being together from the start. “Th-that’s not true…”
That was all I could manage to say.
…But seriously, it’s impossible. If I look at Yuu’s face any longer, I might accidentally confess. I might make the same mistake again. …Love is really bad for your health.
“…Yuu. Can I borrow that withdrawal notice?” When I said that, Yuu looked puzzled.
But he handed me the brown envelope as I asked. I—ripped it to shreds.
“Ahhh! What are you doing!?”
“What am I doing? That’s my line! You’re saying all these cool things, but don’t push the responsibility onto me!”
“But you’re the one who said we’re bound by fate…”
“I did! But that’s just about business! I can’t just let you commit suicide over it!”
“Well, suicide is a bit of an exaggeration.”
“What about a guarantor? What are you going to do when you need one to rent a place?”
“Oh… do I really need one?”
“Of course you do! Moving to the city alone these days is practically suicide!?”
“Well, in Weathering With You, they managed somehow.”
“That was completely a mess though!! It was funny, but don’t use that as a reference, okay!?”
Seriously, this is so like Yuu.
Honestly… he really can’t do without me, huh?
I crumpled the scrap of paper properly and tucked it into the pocket of my bag.
While I was at it, I took out the paper carton of Yoghurppe from the same pocket, stuck in the straw, and sipped it as usual to cool down.
A deep sigh escaped my lips.
…I thought this would turn into something more romantic, but I guess it’s Yuu we’re talking about. Can’t be helped.
“It’s fine. I’m not going anymore.” “…Eh!?”
Yuu reacted immediately.
He grabbed both of my shoulders and brought his face in close. Startled out of my mind, I choked on my Yoghurppe as it came out of my nose!
“W-What!? You already said goodbye, didn’t you!?”
“Cough, cough. No, I mean, what I said earlier wasn’t a lie… but it wasn’t completely true either. Oh, right, it’s because Onii- chan’s against it, so I figured I’d just end up being stopped
anyway…”
“Didn’t you say you wanted to be someone your fans could rely on!?”
“I never said anything like that! Geez, Yuu, you really don’t
understand me, do you!? And stop getting so close to my face!”
I pushed Yuu’s face away with both hands, firmly holding him at arm’s length.
Please, just stop. If you get any closer right now, I really won’t be able to keep my cool. Honestly, I’d want to kiss you. And there’s no way our first kiss is going to involve Yoghurppe coming out of my nose!
I made Yuu stay by the desk while I let out another sigh. “Things between me and Yuu will stay the same as always.
…Enocchi can still do modeling too, but if possible, I’d like it if you prioritized me. That would… make me happy.”
“Got it…”
The atmosphere became awkwardly shy. …Focus, focus. The Yoghurppe carton made a loud slurping sound.
“So?”
“W-What?”
“What’s the thing you said you wanted to give me?” You mentioned it earlier, right?
If it’s not the withdrawal form, then there has to be something else. Don’t think I forgot just because of the mood!
“If you’re not going to Tokyo, then there’s no need…” “Hurry up. Chop chop.”
“…Do I really have to?”
“Yes, you do. Now, hand it over.”
I held out my palm, gesturing impatiently for him to hurry up. With a resigned expression, Yuu reached into his pocket.
“Himari… This kind of ended up out of order, but…” He placed a brown envelope in my palm.
“This looks exactly like the withdrawal form! See, that’s why you keep making mistakes!”
“Hey, I didn’t have time to prepare, okay? When I went out to buy the envelope for the withdrawal form earlier, I just grabbed this one thinking it’d work. It was really hard to get this done, but yesterday, I finally managed to finish it the way I wanted.”
It wasn’t paperwork.
When I turned the envelope upside down and shook it into my palm, something small rolled out.
“W-What is this…?”
I found myself staring at it, completely captivated.
A transparent resin ring. Usually, resin is only used for the decorative part, but this ring was entirely made of clear resin.
Inside the resin floated tiny preserved nirinsou flowers, like an image of a fairy’s playground.
Gazing at it, I murmured absentmindedly.
“This… is really nirinsou? They’re real flowers, but aren’t they way too small?”
Nirinsou flowers are small, but not so tiny that they could fit whole into a ring. Yet, several floated inside.
Yuu grinned sheepishly.
“It’s a miniature of nirinsou, made with preserved flowers…” “What!?”
I squinted and looked closely again.
…This is all miniature?
“I had to use a microscope. I failed a bunch of times, and it was exhausting. I don’t think I could ever make another one like
this.”
Yuu pulled out the broken nirinsou choker from his pocket. He held it apologetically… but with obvious care.
“I broke this choker. So this is kind of a replacement… or maybe a statement of intent for our new life. …A ‘best friend’ ring just for you, Himari.”
Saying that, he turned his face away in embarrassment.
Even so, I could tell he was nervous about my reaction. There was an awkwardness to his words, but Yuu still managed to say them.
“To me, Himari will always be my best friend. That’s why there might be times, like today, when I get careless and make you mad. But it’s not because someone else is more important. That much is absolutely true.”
“…………”
His way of saying it was clumsy, honest, and so very Yuu. …It was also unbearably embarrassing and sweet.
“…Himari. Is this… not good enough?” “ ”
I couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
“Ahahaha! Yuu, you’re the best! There’s no way I could say this isn’t good enough after seeing something like this!”
My anger at him and all the frustration I felt earlier… It all suddenly seemed so trivial. This is bad. This is really bad. Only a total weirdo could make something like this.
“Yuu, turn around for a second.” “Huh? Why?”
“Just do it.” “…Alright.”
Yuu turned around hesitantly.
I threw my arms around his back. “Take that!”
“Whoa, that’s dangerous!?”
I wrapped my arms around his neck, holding up the ‘best friend’ ring, and whispered playfully into his ear like always.
“Put it on me♡” “No, do it yourself.” “No way. You do it.” “ ”
Hesitantly, Yuu took my hand.
And then… he slipped the ring onto the middle finger of my left hand. Tch.
I whispered into his ear. “Coward.”
“I told you, it’s a ‘best friend’ ring.”
“Pfft. …By the way, what’s this tiny brown thing here?”
Floating inside the resin was a single small object resembling a seed. It stood out as an accent and was quite striking.
“…It’s… a nirinsou seed.”
There was an odd pause, but whatever. Hmm, I’ve never seen a seed before. It was shaped like a small brown crescent moon… Cool.
The resin ring had an indescribable smoothness to it… It fit my finger so perfectly it felt like it was part of my skin.
When I held it up under the fluorescent light, the resin refracted the light, creating an otherworldly, fantastical glow.
It was like our relationship.
An intangible promise that served as a bridge connecting us. “Yuu, you should just choose me already.”
The words slipped out.
Unlike my usual jokes, this one stirred something inside me, a heat that refused to go away.
“…Huh?”
Yuu looked bewildered, his mouth slightly agape.
It was so funny, yet so frustrating… Well, I’ll let him off the hook this time.
(Not yet…)
It’s too soon to let my flames of love consume Yuu.
Life is long. Pursuing a dream is hard, but maintaining it is even harder. We’ll face countless challenges together. And like this
‘best friend’ ring, we’ll build an unshakable bond. I only need to win one time—the very last time.
I flashed Yuu a wide smile and repeated myself. “If we’re still single by thirty, just pick me, okay?” “…Well, if we’re both single by then, sure.”
He took out his phone and aimed the camera at us. A soft electronic sound echoed—another promise captured in a photo.
♣♣♣
The moment I looked at the photo we took together, I blurted out, “I’m going to wash my nose in the restroom!” and dashed out of the science lab.
…My nose? I’m not even sure why I said that, but it seemed like my mood had improved. No, it felt even better than before.
Still, I held my head in my hands, groaning. “Aaaahh… Thank goodness…”
Somehow, Himari decided not to transfer schools.
It’s true that Himari is the most important person to me. It’s also true that I was ready to quit school to follow her.
But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t terrified of how reckless it all was…
I mean, I’m still a high school student! When the landlord said I’d need a guarantor to rent a place, I seriously felt like my world was ending. …I should at least get my license soon.
The science lab door opened.
I thought Himari had come back, but… it was Makishima.
His smile was so cruel, I didn’t know humans could even look that heartless.
“Hahaha! Natsu, how boldly you’ve shown off!” “ ”
So he was watching, huh.
Well, yeah. I guess he’d know, especially since the accessory was finished yesterday, and Enomoto-san must’ve told him about it.
“Look, it’ll get awkward if Himari comes back, so just leave, will you?”
“Awkward? That’s my line. I’m about to get dragged to a pity cake party for Rin-chan. And I hate sweets!”
So Enomoto-san saw it too, huh…
…How am I supposed to face her tomorrow?
“But still, Natsu, you chickened out at the end, didn’t you?” “I-I didn’t chicken out! I told her everything!”
“Hah! Then why’d you lie about the seed being nirinsou?”
…Ugh.
Well, when I went to order the flower, I ran into them checking out some new desserts at the store.
In the countryside, everyone goes to the mall on weekends.
…One of the downsides of living here. Makishima grinned mischievously.
“That was a tulip seed, wasn’t it? From a purple tulip, no less.”
“…Yeah. Nirinsou seeds are smaller, greenish, and diamond- shaped.”
Tulip seeds aren’t something people are familiar with.
Usually, tulips are grown from bulbs, even back in elementary school. But before the bulb stage, they can be harvested as seeds, though they’re rare.
The reason? Growing tulips from seeds takes too long. It can take up to five years to bloom, and even then, they often don’t.
That’s why they’re not typically sold in flower shops or home improvement stores. I specifically harvested them for this ring.
“So, why did you chicken out?”
“…………” Purple tulips.
The flower’s meaning is—eternal love.
A vow of undying, unfading love.
A fantastical yet unshakable friendship mixed with a faint trace of romantic feelings. That’s exactly what ‘Himari’ is to me.
I was supposed to tell her that too, but…
“If she rejected me at that moment, I’d literally want to die…” “ ”
Makishima burst into laughter and left.
…Someday.
When we open a shop together, I’ll tell her properly in my own words.
But right now, I’m just not ready for that yet.
My best friend is way too cute, and it’s seriously becoming a problem…!
♢♢♢
Washing my hands in the restroom, I thought to myself.
The face reflected in the mirror looked absolutely awful. …I don’t think I can go back to Yuu’s side for a while.
But the calmer I got, the more I realized that Yuu’s words were, at their core, just sophistry. He’d sugarcoated everything and
talked circles around me, leaving me no room to argue. In the end, all he offered was the status quo.
Even so, I found myself okay with it. That’s just how it is when you’re in love.
At least, in that one moment—those fiery marble-like eyes of his, blazing with all his emotions, were mine and mine alone.
Like a moonflower.
A beautiful bloom that only appears for a single night. Enocchi’s flower.
Right before it blossoms, the bud points upward and releases its fragrance as the petals begin to unfold.
Its dazzling appearance belies its overwhelming scent. So unique that many people don’t like it.
But once you become addicted to its scent, it’s all over. For the sake of that brief encounter lasting only a few hours, you end up pouring your heart and soul into caring for the flower.
Its fragrance is like first love. I finally understood that.
…It’s fine.
If Yuu insists, I’ll settle for being his ‘best friend.’ I’ll hide this love of mine inside the nirinsou ring.
But in exchange, I want Yuu to give me a kind of happiness I could never experience through love.
I’ll win in my way.
With the chains of friendship, I’ll make sure you never leave me.
